Philip V of Spain, born in Versailles on December 19, 1683, was the second son of the Grand Dauphin and the grandson of Louis XIV.
Holding the Duchy of Anjou prior to his accession to the throne, he became King of Spain in 1700 upon the death of Charles II, the last Spanish sovereign of the House of Habsburg.
His accession, which established the Bourbon dynasty in Spain, sparked the War of the Spanish Succession (1701–1714), a major conflict pitting European powers against one another over the balance of dynastic power on the continent.
Despite the Treaties of Utrecht, Philip V retained the Spanish crown, while renouncing his rights to the French throne.
His reign marked a profound administrative and political reorganization of the Spanish monarchy according to the Bourbon model.
