"Antoine Leloup, Veduta XVIIIth From Siebengebirge Along The Rhine, Pen And Indian Ink, Signed"
Refined 18th century drawing by Antoine Leloup representing a rare view of the Rhine and the Siebengebirge in Germany. The topographical definition of the Siebengebirge on Wikipedia is as follows: “mountain range located on the right bank of the Rhine south of Bonn. Among the hills - in fact more than seven - is the Drachenfels associated with the legend of the German hero Siegfried as well as the Himmerich ”On the pen and wash drawing by Antoine Leloup we can clearly distinguish the Drachenfels (translatable as“ dragon rock ”, probably by metaphorical association because of their volcanic origin) surmounted for the first of the castle today in ruins (since 1634 during the 30 years war) which was built by Archbishop Arnold I of Cologne between 1138 and 1167. The second castle that Leloup draws in the background on the second volcanic rock has disappeared, documenting what then existed in the 18th century. The romantic site of the Siebengebirge and its Drachenfels, prized in its time by Byron, remains very touristy. Antoine Leloup brilliantly reproduced the atmosphere. The softness of its luxuriant shores, more depopulated than today, where rare cottages appear, its majestic relief, the ethereal clouds covering its derelict castles. This designer, decorator and virtuoso vedutist, native of the spa town of Spa to which he devoted numerous and precious veduta, stood out by the delicacy of his pen and wash drawing, willingly landscaped, skilled at restoring each geological curve, shimmering of the river to the streaks of its current; it was also illustrated by marvelous decorations adorning porcelain acquired by wealthy aesthetes staying at Spa.
This drawing by Antoine Leloup is pleasantly enhanced by its frame, a pretty ivory marie-louise and a wooden frame and gilded stucco with tiny wear. Of undeniable artistic, aesthetic and historical value.
