This so-called "channel" frame in carved and gilded fir foreshadows the long line of this model which will stand out for its framing qualities around figurative paintings until 1920. With him, the painting is set in its frame. for this reason by collectors it invariably accompanies landscapes, seascapes, male portraits and scenes of genre or history. This slightly rustic model is not, however, devoid of elegance: row of pearls carved at sight, grooves in the throat, acanthus leaves of carved wood in the corners, and tracery bordered by listels at the top ... close eyes can hear the chimney crackling in the next room.
