Antique Louis-philippe-style Fireplace Mirror
The key factors that determine the value of a LOUIS-PHILIPPE-style or period mantel mirror:
- The condition and nature of its gilding (gilded with gold leaf, copper leaf, or roughly coated with a mixture known as “bronzine,” which is simply a mixture of bronze powder suspended in varnish intended to give the illusion of gold;(the latter always has a dull appearance and reduces the object’s value by at least 50 percent)
- The mirror’s dimensions, the second criterion in determining its price (a pediment adds value to the object)
- The type of mirror glass (mercury-coated is the best; antique silvered glass without too many spots or pitting—unless you prefer that look—or more recent silvered glass).
- A back panel made of thin fir planks generally comprises the back of the mirror and reinforces its authenticity.
Our mirror embodies the hallmarks of the “neo-troubadour” style cherished by Viollet-le-Duc, which inspired Victor Hugo to revive this period and bring the style back into the spotlight. The gilding has been restored in our workshop and features a subtly worn and patinated finish. Feel free to ask us about other sizes!! We deliver throughout Paris and the Paris region.
