Vintage Louis XVI-style Gilded Wood And Black Lacquered Frame
Like many others, this Louis XVI-era frame was blackened and gilded during the Directoire (and afterward) as a sign of mourning, in tribute to and in memory of Queen Marie Antoinette. Its subversive nature led to this type of frame being nicknamed “the Queen’s mourning frame.”Sturdy in construction, the joints of these moldings—whose grooves were not yet too pronounced—allow for a reduction in size to adapt them to the subject. The absence of decoration facilitates this process.
In perfect condition; note some general, superficial mottling on the blackened portion due to the aging of the paint, which does not affect the color. An ideal frame for a portrait, landscape, or drawing.
External dimensions: 55 cm x 47 cm Viewing dimensions: 44.5 cm x 36.5 cm
