Box XVIII ° Ivory Gold Tortoise Miniature Gold Rim Diam 5.8
Small circular toilet or cabinet box, French work from the 18th century (circa 1750–1780), of intimate and elegant size (diameter: 5.8 cm – height: 2 cm). The box is made of finely turned antique ivory.
The interior is entirely lined with genuine tortoiseshell, also from the 18th century, meticulously fitted, which is a notable feature of quality for this type of object.
The lid is decorated with a small painted miniature depicting a small marquis in a gallant and decorative style. This is not an identified portrait, but a fanciful figure, characteristic of the 18th-century taste for elegant and idealized representations.
The miniature is presented on a black enamel background surrounded by a gold border.
The beaded decoration offers a refined contrast.
Ebony bands structure the piece, while the exterior background is made of light wood, contributing to the balance of materials and the object's understated elegance.
A fine example of these 18th-century personal objects, combining ivory, tortoiseshell, enamel, and wood, intended for both intimate use and the visual pleasure of the collector.
Antique object dating from before 1947, compliant with regulations in current regulations concerning worked ivory.
Very good condition considering its age.
2 slots on the lid.
