This drawing was made by Eugène Courboin for the illustrated edition of Jean Richepin's Song of the Gueux, published in Paris by Maurice Dreyfous editions, in 1881 (according to the dictionary of illustrators, 1800-1914) , then in 1883. Eugene Courboin thus worked on the production of a series of engravings, seven in number, illustrating the collection of poems. This unpublished drawing is preparatory to one of the seven engravings of the book and illustrates the epilogue of the book: The End of the Beggars. Bottom right, Eugene Courboin also inscribed the following verse, evocative of the poem: "What is this glow that tears the black? ". These drawings perfectly reflect the atmosphere of the illustrated poems and have been faithfully engraved in the collection.
