Maritime Trade Allegory Clock - Ormolu Bronze And Marble - Louis XV Period Circa 1770

Exceptional ormolu bronze and white marble clock, allegory of maritime trade with the Levant. The dial is carried by a sailboat loaded with goods and bales, a Turkish boatman facing the goddess of Fortune on a cornucopia, supporting a frame with Roman emperor and a parchment, a putti pulling a rope to go up the anchor. End of the Louis XV period circa 1760-70. The structure of the clock with its boat and the characters is still Louis XV when the decoration of the base is announcing the Louis XVI style.

Our model is close to that of the former Doucet collection. Another is reproduced in "The Encyclopedia of the French clocks" by P. Kjellberg (page 270), with the profile of Louis XVI "protecting the Navy and the Liberty of Trade ". Another variant exists with cannons arming the ship (see Vergoldete Bronzen, H. Ottomeyer et al.).

Very beautiful piece, spectacular and rare. Mercury gilding (great depth) and the quality of carving are excellent. Our clock is probably a work of the famous bronzier Robert Osmond.
