Solid Silver Timbale Hallmarked With A Rooster, 1st Fineness
Artist: Louis Jacques Berger
An elegantly shaped, classic-style goblet-shaped goblet made of solid silver, hallmarked with a rooster (1st title solid silver, 950/1000).
Mark: A F. Weight: 88 grams.
The rooster faces right, accompanied by the number 1, within an octagonal frame.
The rooster hallmark was in use in France from 1798 to 1819; it thus replaced the royal hallmarks and preceded the Minerva hallmark.
The number 1 indicates the first period: up to 1809; this is therefore the “first rooster hallmark.” Our goblet dates from the Directoire, the Consulate, and the early years of the Empire.
Another hallmark is visible: a Greek woman’s head
followed by the silversmith’s mark within a diamond: “LB” in uppercase and a lowercase “j” with a vase or a basket—undoubtedly Louis Jacques Berger.
This silversmith was particularly renowned for his production of exceptionally fine-crafted goblets, cutlery, and table accessories during the Empire. His pieces are regularly found in major historical collections; notably, he produced military and civilian silverware of the highest quality during this period.
On the underside, four women’s first and last names are engraved—a moving testament to the life of these objects.
Shows signs of use, with a few small dents and scratches on this piece that was created during Bonaparte’s reign!
