Anthropomorphic Pitcher Depicting A Sitting Dog, Signed By Louis Le Gué Coudreceau

A pitcher depicting a seated dog, with a collar bearing the inscription “Joseph—Retourne,” likely the name of the person who commissioned the piece.
Signed on the base: “Le Gué Coudreceau.”
A small town near Nogent-le-Rotrou on the border of Lower Normandy and the Eure-et-Loir department, Coudreceau is a center of Perche pottery.
The Le Gué family has been known there since the 18th century for their pottery work; a “Le Gué Potier” is recorded as early as 1786.
The workshop remained in operation until Louis’s death in 1954.
It was located at a place called “La Poterie,” 1 km from Coudreceau.
The pieces are featured in the collections of various ceramics and folk art museums, including the Ecomusée de Sainte Gauburge. A beautiful retrospective of Louis Le Gué’s works was on display at the Villa Charpentier in 2023

Surprisingly, our dog resembles the pre-Columbian ceramic dogs of the Colima culture (Mexico).
