Portrait of a Young Boy
Oil on canvas
H. 84 cm; W. 70 cm
Provenance: Collection of Señor Valdes Fauri, Madrid, circa 1900–1950; then Private Collection, Bordeaux
This young boy is dressed in a suit whose pants and vest are chosen to match the shade of his blue-gray eyes. The tie knotted around a very wide collar was most certainly chosen for the same color harmony, while the jacket contrasts with the ensemble to lend a certain depth to this touching composition.
Posed in a three-quarter view, the child turns his face away so as not to meet the viewer’s gaze—a rather rare occurrence in portraits of this period. He is leaning on the back of a chair and holds, with his hands clasped, a large bound volume whose red spine is visible on the right.
