Born in Paris, Paul Hugues trained with Fernand Cormon and Henri Royer, who taught him academic rigor and a keen eye for drawing. He quickly specialized in depicting interior spaces: living rooms, bedrooms, and decorated rooms, mainly from the 18th and 19th centuries, where furniture, objets d'art, fabrics, and ornaments played a key role. He exhibited regularly in Paris, notably at the Salon des Artistes Français, of which he became a member in 1923, and at the Salon des Tuileries, which earned him recognition in the official circles of his generation. He was awarded a silver medal at the 1920 Salon, confirming that his art, sober and delicate, was finding its audience. He left a body of work that demonstrates a taste for refinement, for decorative detail, for the harmony between object, light and interior architecture. His work also influenced his artistic family: his son Jean-Baptiste (1931-2007) became a decorator and collector, continuing to explore the emotional and aesthetic value of interior design.
Our canvas, laden with works hanging on the wall, is reminiscent of an artist's studio, with the empty frames placed to the right of the fireplace. It could just as easily be the interior of a collector's home where paintings and musical instruments interact, around slippers warming in front of the fireplace.
