Straw Marquetry Box
A rectangular box with a lid that reveals a compartmentalized interior; its polychrome straw marquetry decoration, featuring floral and geometric motifs, is remarkably well-preserved.
The lid is adorned with a harbor scene featuring a sailboat, architectural structures, a bridge, and vegetation, rendered in golden and brown tones with a radiating design, in a style typical of the first half of the nineteenth century. The interior of the lid features a view of the Place Vendôme and its facades in Paris. On the central column is the second statue of Napoleon, installed during the July Monarchy in 1833 and replaced during the Second Empire in 1863.
The interior base consists of several compartments with lids featuring floral decoration. The front features a molded frame and geometric friezes.
Louis-Philippe period, circa 1840–1850.
