Antique Japanese Black-lacquered Wooden Box

Antique Japanese box made of black lacquered wood, decorated with lacquer and gold.

A rectangular box with a slightly domed lid, entirely coated in deep black lacquer, used to store Buddhist religious texts (wakashanzo).

The lid is adorned with a circular gold decoration featuring a floral motif (a kamon representing a paulownia-kiri, with five flowers in the center and seven on the sides), which is repeated on the front of the box. The gilded decorations, executed on a black background, display a beautiful antique patina and signs of wear that attest to the piece’s age.

On the front, two kamons (traditional Japanese heraldic emblems)

are depicted; a kamon representing a wisteria with drooping clusters.
