Luigi Filippo Sofa - “he And She”

An extremely rare and charming Neapolitan conversation sofa, known as “Lui e Lei” or “tête-à-tête,” from the Louis-Philippe period, mid-19th century, made of carved solid rosewood.
A piece of extraordinary rarity and great visual impact, designed for the aristocratic salons of the era: its design, featuring two opposing backrests, allowed two people to sit facing each other, conversing comfortably without having to turn around, in a typically 19th-century interplay of gallantry and intimacy.
The frame, crafted from dark rosewood with a warm, deep hue, is entirely hand-carved. The two symmetrical, slightly slanted backrests culminate at the top in elegant openwork finials featuring scrolls and shells, carved with the finesse typical of Neapolitan cabinetmaking. In the center, the backrest slopes downward and opens into a refined central panel openworked with floral motifs and volutes, which lightens the silhouette and creates a delightful interplay of transparencies. The front armrests end in carved curved volutes, while the lower perimeter band is accentuated by a fine carved beading. The entire piece rests on four slender, elegant, spindle-turned front legs, with two smaller rear legs.
The upholstery is covered in a luxurious damask fabric in shades of powder blue and ivory with floral motifs, featuring button-tufted backrests and seat, which accentuates the softness of the forms and the overall elegance of the piece. As seen in the photos, the fabric is in excellent condition and lends the sofa a radiant elegance, perfect for both a period living room and a high-end contemporary setting.
