View Of Sainte-baume In 1866
Artist: Ecole Française Xixe
French Schoolof 1866
View of Sainte Baume
Oil on canvas-backed cardboard
H. 12 cm; W. 23 cm
Signed and dated lower right - 1866
Located inland between Marseille and Toulon, the Sainte-Baume massif is visually quite similar to that of Sainte-Victoire, situated to the northwest, near Aix-en-Provence.
This place, commonly known as “Sainte-Baume,” is best known for the cave from which it takes its name, where Mary Magdalene is said to have found refuge. It has been a major pilgrimage site since the Middle Ages.
Our painting, dated 1866, was undoubtedly painted from life on a small, portable canvas and executed quickly to capture the essence of the scene. The windy, dry atmosphere is conveyed by the vigor of the brushstrokes and the hues of the hills in the background.
