Artist: Marc Bonhomme De Lajaumont
Marc BONHOMME de LAJAUMONT
(Chambon-sur-Voueize 1853 – Guéret 1936)
View of Rocamadour
Oil on panel
H. 24.5 cm; W. 19 cm
Signed lower right
Provenance: Private collection, Lot
A rare artist, primarily a landscape painter, who worked in his native region of Guéret, as well as in Corrèze, Aveyron, and the Lot. He trained in Paris and exhibited for only a few years, around 1890, at the Salon des Artistes Français. He spent his entire life between Paris and Guéret, where he spent most of his time. Passionate about history and the arts, he devoted his life to painting and to showcasing cultural heritage
Endowed with genuine talent, Lajaumont created his works with great finesse, using glazing techniques or even sculpting the paint with the back of his brush. The painter’s canvases and panels are almost never found on the art market. Have most of them been preserved by the family? Any additional information would be welcome.
This charming view of Rocamadour was painted around 1880–90 and shows the “holy” town from its usual perspective. However, perched on its rock, it appears in the background, like a detail of the composition, while a couple takes center stage, dressed in blue and red in front of a ruined house. The anecdotal becomes the subject, and the subject becomes the setting.
