Detailed Description
An extraordinary, finely chiseled bronze desk inkwell with a dark patina, a distinguished example of 16th-century Venetian foundry work and attributable to the prestigious tradition of the Paduan school.
Composition and Iconography:
- The Lid: It is surmounted by a figure in ronde-bosse depicting a crouching satyr in a meditative pose, captured in the act of turning toward the left—a classic iconographic element of humanist culture.
- The Central Body: The vessel, intended to hold ink, features a refined pod-shaped urn form, clearly inspired by classical and Roman designs.
- The Structure: The urn is supported by three crouching lions sculpted with strong plasticity, arranged along the perimeter to support the central vessel.
- The base: The structure rests on a trilobed base embellished with festoons, garlands, and grotesque masks, connected to the supporting surface by feet shaped like winged monsters or griffins.
Historical and Artistic Context: During the sixteenth century, the city of Padua became the leading European center for the casting of small bronze statues “in the ancient style.” Under the influence of masters of the caliber of Andrea Briosco, known as “il Riccio”, and Severo da Ravenna, desk accessories were not merely writing implements but true status symbols intended for the study rooms of scholars and collectors. This piece fully embodies the fusion of functional use, classical mythology, and the masterful casting techniques of the Italian Renaissance.
A work of great interest to collectors of ancient sculpture and Renaissance bronzes.
