Small Red Guilloché Enamel Snuff Box With 19th-century Horsemen Design, Louis XVI Style
A charming antique small snuffbox, rectangular in shape with beveled corners, made of gilded metal and translucent red enamel on a guilloché background, adorned with an elegant Rocaille-style design of gilded scrollwork and foliage.
The domed lid features a delicate polychrome painted scene depicting three horsemen galloping through a rural landscape, in the style of 18th-century miniatures.
The gilded metal frame is accented with fine chiseled friezes and decorative moldings. The interior is also gilded.
The underside of the box bears a curious monogram consisting of two interlaced S’s, which may correspond to a workshop or manufacturer’s mark.
19th-century European work, in the style of Limoges enamelware; attribution to be confirmed.
