Painted Tortoiseshell Snuffbox ,germany, Early 19th Century
A tortoiseshell snuffbox, finely painted with a scene depicting four figures and horses resting in front of an inn, with village buildings in the background; the interior bears collector’s labels in German. The painting is executed in the style of the Dutch artist Jan Miel (1599–1663). This type of subject matter is characteristic of lacquered boxes—such as the celebrated creations of the Stobwasser manufactory—whose artisans frequently produced miniature reproductions of paintings featuring pastoral and rural themes, inspired by Flemish and Dutch masters. What makes this particular snuffbox noteworthy is its construction from tortoiseshell. In perfect condition. Germany, early 19th century.
