Venetian Sword / Spada Da Fanti
Venetian sword / Spada da Fanti
There are few examples of this type of sword in circulation; however, some can be found in some of Italy’s most prestigious collections.
The markings suggest that it was crafted by one of Venice’s master swordsmiths. This type of hallmark, which came in several variations, was used by various Venetian craftsmen during this period.
The mount is richly crafted: it consists of an ebony grip adorned with twisted copper or bronze filigree, a pommel of a rare design, and “S”-shaped crossguards. The fittings are made entirely of copper. The sword has undergone cleaning and restoration, the results of which are clearly visible.
The double-edged blade features several fuller grooves on each side. The cutting edge on the back is sharpened along half its length, while the remainder forms the spine of the blade, extending to the ricasso.
On one side, the blade also bears a cutler’s mark associated with Venetian production from the late 16th century.
These swords are also associated with the famous mercenaries known as “Landsknechts.”
Specifications:
Total length: 97.5 cm
Blade length: 83 cm
