Pair Of Large Senufo Fetishes - Ivory Coast - Colonial-era Work, 1930s–1950s
Colonial work, 1930–50.
The Senufo are a people primarily settled in northern Côte d’Ivoire and the border regions of Mali and Burkina Faso. The figures are characterized by voluminous heads topped with tall conical headdresses, half-closed eyes, protruding ears, and mouths with strongly defined lips. The slender bodies, with rounded shoulders and arms detached from the torso, rest on circular bases. The surfaces bear an irregular brown-black patina, revealing the light-colored wood and traces of carving in places.
