Antique Table With A Tabletop Inlaid With Scaiola And Marble, 19th Century
TAV355 - This is an elegant center table (or rectangular console table) featuring a striking tabletop decorated with marble inlay and a carved wooden base.
The tabletop is crafted using the renowned technique of commesso inlay with semi-precious stones and polychrome marbles.
Set against a black marble background (likely Nero Belgio or black marble from Porto Venere), shapes cut from various precious marbles and semi-precious stones are inlaid (among which a sky-blue/light blue medallion stands out in the center, likely lapis lazuli or Cotognino alabaster/jasper).
The composition features elegant geometric and floral scroll motifs, interlaced cartouches, and decorative elements. The perimeter frame is edged with a band of veined/light green marble.
The base consists of two “lyre”-shaped or “trappeto” (trestle-style) legs joined by an elegantly shaped central crossbar, openwork with a central rosette.
Note of Distinction: Tables with semiprecious stone tops and marble inlay are furnishings of great historical and artistic value, traditionally intended for noble residences or elite private collections.
