Igor Mitoraj (1944–2014) – Perseus, Bronze Sculpture With A Brown Patina, 1988

Igor Mitoraj (1944–2014), Perseus, 1988.

Bronze sculpture with a brown patina resting on a travertine base.

A Franco-Polish artist known for his contemporary interpretation of ancient statuary, Igor Mitoraj developed a body of work in which references to Greco-Roman art meet an aesthetic of fragmentation and incompleteness. His sculptures evoke the ideal beauty of the ancient body, while expressing its fragility and the passage of time.

With Perseus, the artist offers a unique interpretation of the mythological figure, in a dialogue between classical heritage and contemporary sensibility. The bronze’s brown patina highlights the sculpture’s volumes and contrasts with the simplicity of the travertine base (accident).
