Large Antique Pectoral Cross Made Of Vermeil– Openwork Floral Design – 19th Century
Large antique pectoral cross in gold-plated sterling silver ( vermeil ) – Openwork floral design – 19th century
A magnificent and imposing antique pectoral cross in vermeil, likely dating from the second half of the 19th century, remarkable for the richness of its ornamentation and the finesse of its goldsmithing.
Description
With beautiful proportions, this cross features a particularly refined design, combining a central structure adorned with small stars in relief with a remarkable openwork decoration of delicately crafted scrolls, flowers, and foliage.
The four arms are surrounded by an elegant network of plant-inspired volutes, embellished with stylized flowers and finely chiseled leaves. The alternation of polished and textured surfaces creates subtle plays of light and highlights the quality of the decorative work.
At the center, a faceted white stone—the nature of which remains to be determined—is set in a finely fluted circular mount.
This pectoral cross comes with its substantial chain in vermeil of twisted links, fitted with a lobster clasp, as well as an elegant antique case lined in black, with a purple interior.
With its rich decoration and historicist aesthetic, this piece follows in the tradition of 19th-century ceremonial pectoral crosses, designed to be worn on the chest.
A beautiful example of antique religious jewelry, particularly striking for its generous size, the delicacy of its openwork ornamentation, and its decorative character.
