Carl M. Cohr – Art Deco Centerpiece Bowl With Beveled Sides, Made Of 826-th Solid Silver –
Carl M. Cohr – Art Deco centerpiece bowl with beveled sides, made of 826-th solid silver – Copenhagen, 1929
Description
A very beautiful centerpiece bowl in 826-th solid silver, crafted in 1929 by the Danish silversmith Carl M. Cohr, bearing the Copenhagen hallmarks.
This bowl, in a pure Art Deco style, features a widely flared silhouette with beveled panels resting on a circular base. Its particularly balanced form is distinguished by the precision of its lines and the simplicity of its composition.
The body is punctuated by a succession of broad beveled panels with delicately hammered surfaces. This hammered finish, which subtly brings the silver to life and creates a beautiful play of light, contrasts with the clean geometric lines that structure the bowl.
The lower section is accented by a geometric frieze of interlocking chevrons, whose regular pattern harmoniously complements the progression of the beveled facets.
What is particularly striking about this Danish creation from 1929 is the extraordinary modernity of its design. Nearly a century after its creation, this bowl retains a purity of line and an aesthetic simplicity that seem to belong to contemporary design. Devoid of any ornamental excess, it relies solely on the elegance of its proportions, the geometry of its forms, and the quality of the silverwork.
One could easily mistake it for a piece from a contemporary designer’s studio, so timeless does its minimalist aesthetic appear. This modernity, already fully established by the late 1920s, attests to the avant-garde nature of Danish design and its ability to prioritize the precision of forms over an abundance of decoration.
An Art Deco piece of silverwork that, beyond its function as a centerpiece, stands out as a true design object, as relevant today as it was at the time of its creation.
