Lille 1754-1755 - Charles-Joseph Ghisbrecht le jeune, silver teapot

Rare plain silver covered teapot made in Lille by silversmith Charles-Joseph Ghisbrecht dit "le jeune" (1693-1765), a major figure in Lille silversmithing in the XVIIIᵉ century and dean of Lille silversmiths from 1759.

This elegant baluster-shaped teapot features the sober, refined architecture characteristic of Lille production in the late Louis XV period. The body, with cut sides in its upper part then softened on the body, rests on a discreetly flared base.

The pouring spout adopts a remarkable zoomorphic form featuring a stylized bird's head with a particularly expressive design. The side handle in blackened wood, secured by scalloped fasteners engraved with floral motifs, harmoniously responds to the revolving fretel also in blackened wood.

The stopper lid is made of blackened wood.

The stave lid, perfectly integrated into the silhouette of the piece, underlines the quality craftsmanship of this teapot, whose elegant proportions reflect high-level goldsmithing. The body is adorned with an engraved monogram in a pearled and ribboned oval medallion.

.

The hallmarks visible beneath the base include the master hallmark of Charles-Joseph Ghisbrecht le jeune and a crowned letter-date Y corresponding to the 1754-1755 jurande.

Master received in Lille in 1713, Charles-Joseph Ghisbrecht practiced for over fifty years. Today, his work remains sought-after for the quality of its execution and the rarity of the pieces preserved.
