18th-century George III Period Octagonal Mahogany Inlaid Wine Cooler
Handsome George III Inlaid Mahogany Octagonal Wine Cooler, attributed to Gillows, c. 1790
A fine and elegant, top-quality late 18th-century George III-period cellarette of octagonal form, crafted from richly figured mahogany with a warm, mellow color and a lovely aged patina, attributed to Gillows. The hinged flat top is finished with mahogany banding, while ebony stringing and delicate satinwood inlay add refined detail throughout. Opening the lid reveals the original fitted interior, with compartments for wine bottles and a central well for ice, lined with metal to keep the contents cool. Original brass lifting handles on either side make it easy to carry, and a central keyhole escutcheon is fitted with a working lock and key, ensuring your finest bottles remain secure. It stands on its original base with elegant, square, fluted, tapered legs, finished with small brass casters, allowing it to be moved with ease. A rare surviving example and a practical piece of period furniture. Equally at home as a statement piece in a dining room or a drawing room, it adds an authentic touch of Georgian elegance and provides a stylish place to store your wine.
