Portrait Of Emperor Napoleon I - First Empire Print In Its Frame, Signed Labatut &
A truly beautiful historical ensemble combining a First Empire-era print with a Belle Époque-era art frame, a testament to the craftsmanship of a renowned Bordeaux firm.
A bust portrait of Emperor Napoleon I in military uniform, wearing his officer’s epaulets and the medal of the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honor.
An engraving from the First Empire period (circa 1804–1814) by the famous engraver Barthélemy Joseph Fulcran Roger (1767–1841), based on the original drawing or miniature by Jean-Urbain Guérin (1761–1836). Originally titled “Napoleon I, Emperor of the French, King of Italy.”
The print is enhanced by a mount featuring Marie-Louise in a water-green wash with gold fillets of the highest quality.
The heavy-cardboard mat is signed with a cold-stamped mark (the studio’s monogram) in the upper right corner.
On the back of the print is the complete original label from the prestigious “Fabrique Générale d’Encadrements L. Labatut”, located at 97 Rue Porte-Dijeaux in Bordeaux. The label bears the rare diagonal red ink stamp “LABATUT & ROCTON”, allowing this work of art to be precisely dated between 1903 and 1914.
The period frame is made of wood gilded with gold leaf, adorned with classical pearl and ovule motifs.
The piece has remained “in its original condition,” is structurally sound, and is very well preserved. Note the moisture stains (old water spots) visible on the edges of the cardboard Marie-Louise mount, which lend a beautiful patina of authenticity but can be reduced through cleaning if the buyer wishes. The central engraving is well preserved.
