Japanese Tansu, Storage Cabinet, 19th–early 20th Century

The piece is reinforced with beautiful wrought-iron corner fittings (kakute), hand-riveted using a traditional technique designed to protect the furniture during transport—tansu were designed to be easily moved, particularly in the event of a fire. The movable ring handles and the central lock with an iron plate are original. The underside of the piece bears a red oval workshop or inspection stamp, attesting to its authentic Japanese craftsmanship.

Beautiful patina from use covers the entire body. The piece has a few cracks on the side posts, consistent with its age and use, as well as a finish that may have been refinished at a later date—condition can be seen in additional photos upon request.

A lovely example of traditional Japanese utilitarian furniture—both functional and decorative—that fits equally well in an Asian-inspired interior or a minimalist contemporary setting.
