17th Pair Of Baroque Marble Medallions Pope Gregory VIII And Leo IX
Pair of marble medallions depicting the profiles of Popes Gregory VIII and Leo IX. Italy, Roman workshop, late 17th–early 18th century.
The medallions depict the profiles of two of the most influential popes in the history of the Church: Gregory VIII, born Alberto di Morra (1100–1187), known for having called the Third Crusade —the one led by Frederick Barbarossa and Richard the Lionheart—and Leo IX, born Bruno von Egisheim-Dagsburg (1002–1054), a central figure during the Great Eastern Schism.
These are works of unmistakably Italian craftsmanship, attributable to a prestigious Roman workshop of the Baroque era. The details of the faces and liturgical vestments are sculpted with extraordinary skill and great anatomical precision. Each medallion is set within its original circular frame of richly carved wood, characterized by a refined dark patina and embellished with gilded details and highlights that enhance its visual impact.
There are no restorations or breaks.
Dimensions:
Medallion diameter: 7.5 cm;
Frame diameter: 12 cm.
