Henri Plisson (1908–2002) – Landscape At Dusk - Oil On Canvas
Oil on canvas – 20th-century French school
Henri Plisson was a major French painter, ceramicist, and illustrator of the 20th century. Appointed to the prestigious title of Official Painter of the Navy (POM) in 1973 (just one year after completing this painting), he traveled extensively aboard ships of the French Navy. His works are characterized by a vibrant, modern Post-Impressionist style, featuring generous impasto applied with a brush or palette knife to capture the light of ports and coastlines around the world.
A multifaceted artist, he developed a body of work devoted to landscape painting, figurative scenes, and ceramics. He exhibited regularly in Paris—notably at the Drouant, Breteau, and Chardin galleries—as well as throughout France and abroad.
This painting is a precious record of his travels in the Indian Ocean. It depicts a blazing sunset over the island of Anjouan, in the Comoros archipelago. In the foreground, two local figures gaze out at the sea from a beach. The color palette is exceptional: Plisson uses vibrant yellows, oranges, and a bright red horizon to convey the stifling heat and otherworldly light of a sunset over the sea.
