G. Hervor, The Blacksmith. Large Art Deco-era Sculpture, France, Circa 1930.
Artist: G. Hervor
G. HERVOR (pseudonym of Jean DE RONCOURT, 1869–1937). "The Blacksmith" (Le Forgeron) or "Man Forging His Bow." A significant Art Deco-era sculpture, France, circa 1930. This superb sculptural group, cast in *régule* (a zinc-based alloy), depicts a heroic athlete. The male figure is shown kneeling, engaged in intense physical exertion; his powerful, exquisitely defined musculature reflects the academic style characteristic of the period. With one hand, he firmly holds the curve of his bow, which rests against a rock, while with the other, he proudly brandishes a hammer to strike the metal. The original patina features subtle, antique-green undertones. The rendering of his wavy hair and the focused expression on his face are hallmarks of the artist’s style. The piece rests securely on an imposing oval base of black marble, the polished, glossy surface of which creates a striking contrast with the matte patina of the figure. The signature "G. HERVOR" is incised and clearly legible on the top of the marble base. G. Hervor is the best-known pseudonym used by Jean de Roncourt—a French artist recognized as one of the finest sculptors of the male nude during the Art Deco era. His works celebrate physical strength, virility, and themes drawn from mythology or athletics. His *régule* sculptures, executed with remarkable finesse, rival the bronze works of the same period. This highly decorative display piece would be a magnificent addition to either a modern or a classic interior; it stands as a notable historical example of French statuary from the interwar years.
