Impressive Napoleon III-style Floor Lamp With A Shelf, Period: Late 19th Century / 1870
Period: Late 19th century (circa 1870–1880) Materials: Chiseled bronze, gilded brass, patinated bronze shaft, lampshade in silk, velvet, and embroidered trimmings.
Dimensions: Total height: 190 cm An elegant and rare floor lamp in bronze and gilded brass, a masterpiece of eclecticism characteristic of the Napoleon III period.
The lamp rests on a powerful triangular gilded bronze tripod base, crowned with acanthus scrolls and ending in vigorous lion’s-paw feet encircling spheres.
Rising from this base is a central cylindrical shaft in patinated bronze, adorned with a delicate twisted design mimicking a spirally fluted column.
Halfway up, the shaft features an elegant circular shelf made of gilded brass, ideal for use as a side table.
This tabletop is framed along its edge by a slender, openwork gallery of chiseled bronze, featuring a motif of hanging drapery and exquisitely delicate pearls.
The upper section features a structure with three light sources, providing a warm and enveloping glow.
The piece is topped by a sumptuous original lampshade made of salmon-colored pleated fabric, embellished with a wide velvet band and delicately embroidered floral and avian motifs.
This structurally imposing piece stands at a remarkable height of 190 cm. The object is presented in its original condition and will require light surface cleaning to restore the full luster of its original gilding.
Although this piece bears no visible signature, the quality of its craftsmanship and the finesse of its chiseling immediately bring to mind the work of the great Parisian bronze artists of the second half of the 19th century, such as the Barbedienne workshop or Henri Picard.
These renowned workshops had made a specialty of these hybrid pieces of furniture, combining the function of a lamp with that of a pedestal table.
The ornamental repertoire used here—combining Empire-inspired claw feet with Louis XVI-style draped friezes—perfectly illustrates the genius of the designers of the Napoleon III era, masters in the art of reinterpreting historical styles to create pieces of ostentatious luxury and absolute comfort.
