Based On Jean-antoine Houdon (1741–1828), *diane The Huntress*, A Bronze Sculpture With A Brown Patina

Artist: Jacques-antoine Houdon (1741-1828)
A large solid bronze sculpture with a nuanced brown patina depicting the goddess Diana in full nudity.

This work is an reproduction cast from the second half of the 19th century.

It is based on the bronze masterpiece cast in 1790 by the famous Neoclassical sculptor Jean-Antoine Houdon, now housed in the Louvre Museum.

The specimen shown measures 55.5 cm in height.

The piece does not bear the “HOUDON” signature, which should be engraved on its circular pedestal.

On the reverse side of this same base is a serial number stamped in intaglio: 1529.

The inner surface of the base reveals a meticulous antique foundry assembly with an original gilded brass central mounting system.

The overall condition is very good, characterized by normal wear and tear on the patina.

As visible, the bronze bow and arrow are missing from the goddess’s hands.

The history of this major work began in 1776 with Houdon’s first plaster model.

The artist then produced versions of his work in terracotta and later in marble in 1780, before delivering three large monumental bronzes.

Stylistically, this work marks a bold transition in the history of French sculpture.

The regularity of the facial features and the purity of the lines reflect the purest classicism.

However, the Mannerist elongation of the proportions and the whirling pose lend the nymph an unprecedented airy lightness.

Anchored at a single point of contact with the base, she seems to suspend her movement and defy the laws of gravity.
