Gadaix, A Bronze Sculpture With A Nuanced Brown Patina Depicting A Dancing Nymph Or Bacchante.
Her body is partially draped in a fine fabric tied at the shoulder and wrapped around her hips.
She gracefully raises her left arm to hold aloft a bountiful cluster of grapes.
Her right hand discreetly holds a key with a stylized lily motif behind her back.
The young woman balances on the tip of her left foot.
Her support is allegorically established on the open mouth of an inverted mask or ephebe’s head.
The nymph’s face displays a serene expression with a faint smile and half-closed eyes.
Her wavy hair is neatly gathered into a classic low bun.
The circular bronze pedestal features simple, refined molding.
The signature “GADAIX” is clearly engraved in capital letters on the rim of this pedestal.
The anatomical details and the flowing drapery demonstrate a high level of technical mastery in modeling.
The inner reverse side of the base reveals a hollow structure typical of sand-cast art castings.
Two antique fastening nuts securely hold the central bronze structure in place.
The dark patina features subtle nuances that reveal the metal’s gilding on the reliefs.
The signature refers to F.A. Gadaix, a publisher, foundryman, or sculptor active in France during the second half of the 19th century.
The Gadaix firm distinguished itself in the reproduction of great masterpieces of antiquity, such as the Venus de Milo and the Diana of Gabii.
It also produced ornamental bronzes and mythological allegories inspired by the Neoclassical style.
Gadaix’s works are characterized by meticulous attention to detail in the chiseling and patinas.
This work fits perfectly with the eclectic taste of the late 19th century, which sought movement and harmony in lines.
