7-light Floor Lamp Depicting A Nubian In The Venetian Style (20th Century)
Large early 20th-century Venetian-style candelabra featuring a carved wooden Nubian figure, painted in polychrome and gilded. The draped figure supports a seven-branched candelabra made of gilded iron. The entire piece rests on a hexagonal pedestal base made of wood painted to imitate faux marble, adorned with carved and gilded “consoles” at the corners.
Drawing on the 18th-century Venetian tradition and reinterpreted through Orientalism, the iconography of this candelabra is shaped by the context of colonial trade and the slave trade. It depicts a Black figure (probably a child) in the role of a servant or light-bearer, where the luxury of the gilding contrasts with the condition of servitude carved into the wood.
A ceremonial decorative piece in good condition.
