Indonesia, Circa 1960–1970, A Mask Symbolizing The Barong Theater Performances.

Indonesia, circa 1960–1970, a delightful mask from the Barong theater.
This colorful and highly expressive mask was featured in a famous mask performance originating in Indonesia: the Barong.
Barong theater masks are generally spectacular and highly representative of Balinese culture. Their menacing appearance, with bulging eyes, is believed to scare away evil spirits. These masks are considered sacred, and before each performance, they are sprinkled with holy water and presented with offerings. This demonstrates just how symbolic and meaningful this dance is, and it illustrates the constant struggle between good and evil.
