Andrée Simon (1896-1981), Abstract Composition, Oil On Panel, 1978.
Andrée Simon, a painter born in 1896 and died in 1981, was originally from Normandy. She taught drawing for a few years before devoting herself entirely to painting, setting up her first studio in Rennes in 1928. Her style at that time was figurative and very much in the style of Cézanne. She became friends with André Lhote, who taught her painting in Mirmande in the Drôme region. Together, they discovered the village of Gordes, which she fell in love with. She and her husband bought a house there and lived there for forty years. Andrée Simon and André Lhote were later joined by numerous artists, some of international renown such as Victor Vasarely, Serge Poliakoff, Marc Chagall, Jean Degottex, and others. Andrée Simon then turned her art towards abstraction. For her, it was a natural and obvious step. She was inspired by observing trees, clouds, and all the effects of light. This abstract art, initially geometric, later becomes lyrical. But nothing is left to chance. Andrée Simon "constructs" her works according to a highly personal artistic approach. She gives free rein to her emotions while controlling them through a process born from her work and the method she imposes upon herself. In this way, she is noticed by discerning art lovers and critics with whom she maintains close relationships, such as Belon, Degand, and Estienne. Let us not forget that she is a woman in a misogynistic milieu. The art world is, above all, a man's world. And yet, through her talent and her work, she establishes herself as an undeniable force: an essential artist with a truly unique talent. This superb composition, an oil on panel from 1978, reflects her later work in an assemblage of joyful colors. This piece comes from the artist's studio collection, carefully preserved by her grandson, Martin Nicolas de Barry, who has kindly granted us access so that we can share, in our own way, the superb paintings, gouaches, and watercolors of Andrée Simon. Dimensions: Height 47 cm. Length 47.5 cm. Unframed. The artist's monogram is inscribed in the lower right corner. The year 1978 is indicated on the back of the panel. The work is in good condition, with the exception of three horizontal cracks in the wooden panel, which are understandable given its age and do not detract from its overall beauty.
