Carved Wood And Gilded Brass Malabar Chest From India – South India – 19th Century
A very beautiful Indian chest known as a “Malabar chest”, dating from the early 19th century and originating from the Malabar Coast in southwestern India.
This remarkable rectangular chest features a beautiful solid wood structure with a warm brown patina, richly adorned with carvings and gilded brass trim.
The front is decorated with a large panel carved in relief, featuring an elegant symmetrical composition of foliage scrolls, volutes, and stylized floral motifs.
The piece is enhanced by numerous cut-out and openwork brass inlays, including spandrels, rosettes, geometric motifs, and keyholes—all characteristic of the rich decorative repertoire of traditional Indian chests.
The flat lid, revealing the wood’s magnificent grain, is adorned with circular rosettes and brass corner reinforcements.
It reveals a spacious storage area, along with a small interior side compartment, once intended for storing valuables, jewelry, or documents.
The quality of the carving, the abundance of metal fittings, and the harmony of the proportions lend this chest a particularly decorative character.
