JAPAN - Meiji Period (1868–1912).
Teapot / sake pitcher with an iron base of the choshi type, featuring a wide, circular body decorated with arare (beaded) pattern, long spout (with a very slight chip at the tip), fixed handle stamped with stylized cherry blossoms, lid made of wood lacquered red on one side and black on the other, copper knob with a stylized chrysanthemum flower motif.
Dimensions: 19 x 22 x 16 cm.
Notes: In Japan, the serving of sake follows codified customs that reflect the importance placed on politeness and conviviality. It is customary to pour for one’s guests rather than to fill one’s own cup, a gesture that demonstrates consideration and respect for others. Sake is traditionally poured into small ceramic or porcelain cups, called sakazuki or ochoko, while chōshi pitchers are used to present and serve it, either hot or at room temperature depending on its type and the season. During meals and celebrations, the serving is often accompanied by toasts and the passing of cups, strengthening the bonds between participants. Beyond its practical function, this ritual is thus part of the Japanese art of hospitality, in which precision of movement and attention to others play an essential role.
