Silver Ruble Of Peter The Great. 1723
A rare silver ruble of Peter the Great, minted in 1723 during the final phase of the monetary reform carried out by Russia’s first emperor. This issue is among the most sought-after coins of the Petrine era and corresponds to the variety depicting the sovereign wearing the ermine-trimmed mantle without the insignia of the Order of St. Andrew the First-Called.
The obverse features the laureated bust of Emperor Peter I facing right, clad in the imperial mantle edged with ermine. The absence of the insignia of the Order of St. Andrew is the primary identifying feature of this variety, considered one of the most significant among the various dies used for the 1723 rubles. The outer legend bears the imperial title.
The reverse shows the famous heraldic composition forming a cross of four Cyrillic letters “П,” each surmounted by an imperial crown. The four “1”s placed in the corners indicate the face value, while the date 1723 is distributed around the composition. This type of reverse is one of the most characteristic emblems of Peter the Great’s coinage and symbolizes the establishment of the monetary system of the new Russian Empire.
The coin features remarkable striking, perfectly preserved relief, and an elegant antique patina, characteristic of authentic Russian silver coins from the first quarter of the 18th century.
