"putto Head" Wall Sconce, 18th Century
Rare carved solid wood wall sconce, 18th century
A superb carved wooden wall sconce featuring a remarkable putto head in high relief, framed by a profuse head of hair with deeply carved and delicately curled locks.
The composition is set within a stepped architectural structure, accentuated by an overhanging upper cornice and side scrolls reminiscent of volutes.
The lower section is adorned with a carved motif in the shape of a twisted ribbon, lending balance and refinement to the piece as a whole.
The face, with its full features and gentle expression, is a testament to particularly expressive carving.
The contours of the forehead, cheeks, and hair are highlighted by an antique patina with deep reddish-brown hues, revealing the irregularities and marks of time.
The construction on the reverse side, with its original joinery and fastenings, adds to the historical interest of this piece.
