Adjustable Mantelpiece From The Louis XVI Period
Description:
Wrought iron, gilded brass, gilded and chiseled bronze.
This elegant fireplace accessory consists of a central rod featuring a panel depicting the infant Dionysus.
A teach end of the panels, adorned with a rosette and agilded frame, are designed to slide, allowing you to adjust the length of the mantel piece bar.
It is an elegant, if somewhat provincial, piece.
Infact, it is the work of a blacksmith, not a bronze artist.
The back is a wrought-iron plate, as are the sliding panels, the sides, and the base plates.
The decorative elements are of fine “Parisian” quality; theblacksmith either commissioned them or salvaged them.
This piece is a “testament” to the artisans’ highly intelligentaesthetic and technical adaptability.
The conditionis virtually original, with attractive patina and minor signs of wear from use; this fire bar has always simply been cleaned and polished, aside from minor repairs such asnew screws or a few welds on the back.
Asis often the case, it comes from a modest aristocratic household thatcould only afford the services of their blacksmith.
Although it was likely destined for the scrap dealer, it is a rare object, unlike the19th-century bronze gallery fireplaces.
Thanks toits simple shape and adaptable size, it can be use delsewhere besides the fireplace.
Conditions:
Simply cleaned; the shine has been restored and the rust on the back has been treated.
Dimensions:
Height:14 cm
Length:from 85 cm to approximately 110 cm.
