Pair Of Rare Early 19th Century Oil Lamps
Description:
Bronze, opaline glass.
This pair of oil lamps is unusual because it is more ornate than typical bronze models. The reservoir is faceted and surmounted by a frieze, and the base features lion's paws and scrolls.
At the beginning of the 20th century, they were modified for electrification.
Oil lamps originally used (whale) oil; the principle relied on gravity, with the reservoir being higher than the burner, allowing the oil to flow into it through a tube. Several systems were invented to utilize oil (Carcel lamp, Sinombre lamp, etc.).
The refining of kerosene simplified the operation of fuel lamps, as it could now rise by capillary action in the reservoir, which was in contact with and beneath the burner.
Condition:
Good used condition, electrification checked, age-related wear to the green patina. A 2mm chip on one opaline glass, without a crack and virtually invisible.
Dimensions:
Height: 48 cm, overhang: 28 cm, base diameter: 17 cm.
Ref. 3372 / 6 kg / 900 g.
