Weapon used until the Second Empire
For the French Army’s infantry

Second Empire period and earlier—19th century.

This saber was used, among others, by infantry soldiers as well as those of the Foreign Legion until the 1870s. It was used as a cutting tool in the field; it could also serve as a camp axe and a pruning knife for cutting fodder for the horses.

In fine condition.

On May 12, 1831, the Infantry Committee announced the adoption of a new model of saber, intended to compensate for the relative fragility of the 1816 model, which had a hollow-edged blade. Before this weapon was adopted, it underwent rigorous testing. The specifications of the time required that the saber be able to strike 4,000 blows on logs in less than 8 hours without the blade being damaged and without any play in the hilt.

Total length:  Approximately 64 cm
Blade length: Approximately 49 cm
Maximum blade width: Approximately 4.3 cm

Features a cast brass mount and an ovoid pommel topped by a dome serving as a rivet button.

The Roman-style handle, a single piece of ribbed brass with a round pommel, features 26 flutes. It completely covers the tang and is secured by hammering; no rivets pass through the handle. The straight, symmetrical crossguard is finished with two rolled “quillons.”

Double-edged, carp-tongue-shaped blade with a triangular flat at the ricasso

A slightly protruding ridge extending to the tip

A cohesive set in good condition.

No play between the blade and the handle

Blade in very fine condition; it could be polished to a mirror finish with little effort...

This is indeed its original scabbard; the leather is in excellent condition and very supple, with beautiful, perfectly sturdy stitching.

Scabbard leather in good condition, with a pommel in very good condition and securely attached to the scabbard.

A beautiful item, a rare “mint condition” find, a collector’s item
