Crespina With Fantastic Animals—majolica, Italy, First Half Of The 16th Century.
Majolica with an archaic-style polychrome high-fire decoration. Fluted with a scalloped rim, in cobalt blue, orange-yellow, and brown on a creamy white background. Amid stylized blue foliage, a menagerie of birds, rabbits, and fantastical felines unfolds. The fluted design is common in majolica from the first half of the 16th century. This piece may originate from the Deruta region, a center where, around 1500–1530, one can still observe naive bestiaries—inherited from the medieval vocabulary—featuring saturated compositions with no empty spaces; a mixture of real and imaginary animals.
