Salamander-shaped Harness Buckle — Iron, Late 15th–early 16th Century
Harness buckle, Western Europe, late 15th–early 16th century. Forged and chiseled iron. A rare example featuring a zoomorphic prong depicting a salamander. This ostentatious detail is found on pieces from the late 15th and early 16th centuries. It is likely a piece of equestrian equipment or harness. The salamander motif is common on locks and door knockers from the second half of the 15th century through the 1550s (e.g., MET, inv. 2016.433). In very fine condition.
