Scagliola Plaque Decorated With An Antique-style Vase Of Flowers, Italy, Late 18th / Early 19th Century
A rectangular plaque in the classical style made of scagliola, late 18th to early 19th century. Set against a deep black background imitating marble paragone, the central design, executed with great finesse, features a lush floral bouquet spilling from an antique-style vase flanked by large, scalloped yellow handles. The artisan has masterfully created the illusion of the most precious minerals. The body of the vase and the tendrils take on the vibrant, nuanced blue of lapis lazuli, while the inverted tulips mimic pink marble and the foliage simulates green jasper. The composition is highlighted by a yellow inner border and set within a wide peripheral border imitating red Languedoc marble. A beautiful curiosity cabinet piece, highly decorative and characteristic of the taste for illusionism and antiquity under Italian Neoclassicism.
Good condition, with surface wear and a patina of age; there are minute chips in the outer border that do not affect the clarity of the central motif.
