Pair Of Porcelain Vases Decorated With Figures And Flowers – Japan, 19th Century
A substantial pair of Japanese porcelain vases—Imari or Arita type (featuring Kakiemon, Gosu, or Kutani-style enamels)—highly representative of export ware from the Edo or Meiji periods. They feature an elegant, flared neck ending in a scalloped, wavy rim. The body is teardrop or gourd-shaped, with a bulbous base.
The upper neck is decorated with rich floral motifs in polychrome enamels—specifically peonies and lush green foliage—painted against the white porcelain background. The central body displays large reserved cartouches or medallions outlined in iron-red. Inside the main medallion is a figurative scene depicting Japanese nobles dressed in fine traditional attire (patterned kimonos and haori jackets). The design also includes a simplified background landscape featuring lightly sketched mountains, a red-orange terrace, and vegetation. Minor damage and losses. Dimensions: height 34 cm.
